There’s no single path into quantitative research, but curiosity, technical skill and a love of problem-solving are always where it starts. At G-Research, we’re passionate about helping talented people begin their journey and grow into exceptional researchers.
Quantitative research career paths
Quantitative research is where brilliant minds turn ideas into impact – a space for people who see patterns where others see noise, and turn ideas into breakthroughs that shape the future.
If this sounds like your kind of challenge, this guide is here to help map out your journey – from your first research role to leading teams at the frontier of data and discovery. However, your career doesn’t need to be linear – the opportunity to advance in a world-leading firm is there for the taking, and you’ll set the path.
Why a career in quantitative research?
Quantitative research is for those who refuse to be limited, the people who see complexity as opportunity. It’s a chance to dive into the pursuit of better answers, innovate without boundaries and create models that predict financial markets. Here, curiosity isn’t just encouraged – it’s expected.
The work is diverse and fast-moving. You might refine a model one day, explore new data sources the next or collaborate with our engineers to turn theory into production-ready systems. The rewards match the challenge – high earning potential, rapid career growth and the chance to work alongside some of the brightest minds in STEM.
At G-Research, you’ll find the freedom and resources to push boundaries and build a career that evolves as fast as the field itself. For those who thrive on intellectual challenge and want something truly world-class – you’ve found it.
How to become a quantitative researcher
1. Start with strong foundations
Most quantitative researchers at G-Research hold a PhD in a highly technical or mathematical discipline such as physics, mathematics, computer science, or engineering. This depth of study develops the analytical precision and intellectual rigour essential for success in the field, and forms the foundation for every great quant career.
2. Develop the right skills
Technical skill is only one part of the equation. The best quants have a blend of hard and soft skills, such as:
- Excellent programming skills: We value experience in languages like Python, C++ and Rust but we’re open if your strengths and expertise lies elsewhere
- Creative thinking: Off-the-shelf solutions rarely work, so great quants will be willing to push boundaries and use the latest research or even create their own novel approaches
- Collaboration: Success here demands close collaboration across disciplines. Our researchers and engineers work as one team to turn complex ideas into impact
3. Apply what you know
Once you’ve built a strong foundation, it’s time to put theory into practice. Take part in research projects, compete in Kaggle competitions or attend one of our Quant Challenges to sharpen your skills and showcase your thinking.
You can also explore opportunities to gain first-hand experience through the G-Research Spring into Quant Finance insight week, which gives an excellent introduction into the world of quant – all while enjoying an overseas trip to cap off the experience. Getting papers accepted at leading conferences such as NeurIPS or ICML also shows your ability to contribute to the field. Every experience you build strengthens your application – and brings you one step closer to a full-time role at G-Research.
4. Take the next step
You’ve built the foundation, now it’s time to prove what you can do. Show us how you think, how you solve problems and how you turn complex ideas into clear results.
Reading our quant interview questions resource will help you prepare for the real challenges ahead, and show you what it takes to stand out among the best.
Your journey as a quant starts with curiosity. It evolves with opportunity. And at G-Research, it can go anywhere.
Summer Research Programme
Our Summer Research Programme is a 10-week internship designed for exceptional students ready to explore quantitative research in depth – and get a head start in their careers.
Throughout the programme, you’ll bring theory to life through hands-on projects in data analysis, model development and complex problem-solving. You’ll work alongside leading researchers and engineers, gaining clarity on where your skills could take you. Even better, many of our interns go on to join G-Research as permanent employees.
If you’re curious, driven, and eager to learn from the best, this is where your quant career begins.
From entry-level to senior quant
Many start their journey as interns at G-Research, working on live research projects that shape real trading and investment strategies. You’ll collaborate with leading mentors, test new ideas and see your work make an impact from day one.
As you progress, a permanent role gives you room to explore. You’ll work on ambitious problems that demand both creativity and rigour, with the autonomy to push research forward and the support to keep growing.
At G-Research, progression isn’t about time served, it’s about the difference you make. Whether your path leads to leadership, deep technical expertise or both, the next step is yours to define.
Specialising as a senior quant
As a senior quant at G-Research, you’ll have the freedom to define your focus, whether that’s deepening your expertise in anything from high-frequency trading strategies to machine learning or strategy design.
Many senior researchers lead their own research streams, mentor upcoming talent and collaborate across disciplines to turn new ideas into production-ready innovations. This is your opportunity to leave a mark – on the work, the team and the industry itself.
Frequently asked questions
Quantitative research at G-Research is highly specialised, and most of our researchers hold a PhD in a quantitative or technical discipline. This level of study provides the depth of knowledge and research experience needed to tackle the complex problems we work on every day. However, if you’re still studying, our Spring into Quant Finance programme offers valuable insight into the field and a fast-track pathway into our 10-week internship.
We invest heavily in development through mentorship, technical training, cross-team collaboration and the freedom to explore new ideas. You’ll be encouraged to publish, innovate and lead as your career advances. That culture of learning extends through our in-house Machine Learning College – a bespoke programme of seminars and workshops led by world-class researchers and engineers, designed to keep our practitioners at the forefront of the field.
Not at all. We look for brilliant minds, not banking backgrounds. Most of our researchers join us from academia and learn the finance side once they’re here.
Your development starts the moment you join. Dedicated mentorship, structured technical training and real research experience, we give early-career researchers the support and freedom to grow fast – and make an impact early.
