We are delighted to share that the G-Research-sponsored UK junior physics team has returned from the International Olympiad on Astronomy & Astrophysics (IOAA) 2025 in Mumbai, India, with an exceptional set of results.

Competing against 288 of the world’s most talented students from 63 countries, the team achieved:

  • 4 Gold medals
  • 1 Silver medal
  • Joint 2nd place in the overall country rankings
  • A highest-ever UK individual ranking, with one student placing 3rd globally

Congratulations to all competitors!

This marks a truly historic achievement for the UK, only rivalled by the five Gold medals secured in 2023 – a team led this year by two of its returning alumni.

Dr Alex Calverley, Chair of the British Astronomy and Astrophysics Olympiad (BAAO), said:

“The students have worked so hard for this and it’s fantastic to see their effort recognised on the global stage. These results reflect the exceptional talent of the team and the importance of sustained support for STEM education.”

Christoph, Head of Research at G-Research said:

“Congratulations! We’re so delighted by the results, and incredibly proud of all the participants and the small role we’ve played in supporting their journey to India, and to very nearly the top of the medal table.

“At G-Research, we recognise the importance of the International Science and Maths Olympiads. We count a number of former Olympiad competitors in our ranks, so we can vouch for the hard work and dedication required to get there and compete. Well done to the whole British Physics Olympiad (BPhO) team that laid the groundwork for sustained success, not just this year but also in the recent past, notably the historic gold medal haul in 2023.”

Supporting the next generation of STEM talent

The UK team trains and competes through BPhO, proudly sponsored by G-Research. Our partnership helps ensure that the UK’s most talented young physicists and astronomers have access to world-class training and the opportunity to compete internationally, building both technical skills and confidence.

This success reflects the hard work of the students and the dedication of the BPhO organisers and team leaders. It also highlights the long-term value of sustained investment in STEM education and the impact it can have on inspiring and nurturing the next generation of scientific talent.

Katherine Shenton, NextGen Programme Lead at G-Research, said:

“It’s fantastic to see the students achieve such remarkable results on the global stage after working so hard. We’re proud to support BPhO in providing opportunities like this, and it’s inspiring to see the impact that investing in young talent can have. Their success is a testament to both their dedication and the strength of the programme.”
