Welcome to Meet the Scholars – a new blog series celebrating the talented students supported by G-Research scholarships. These awards form a key part of our NextGen initiative, which is dedicated to nurturing the next generation of researchers in STEM and AI/Machine learning (ML).

These stories spotlight the individuals driving the future of research: their academic journeys, areas of focus and what the opportunity means to them. In this first edition, we meet Emily, who has joined the Statistics and ML (StatML) CDT, a joint doctoral programme between Imperial College London and the University of Oxford.

I am Emily. I'm starting my PhD at the at Imperial and I will be joining the ML CT TI did an undergrad in mathematics at Berlin at the technical university there. And then I moved to London for my masters in Applied Math, which I did at Imperial. And now I'm starting my PhD also at Imperial. Yeah, I think my journey to a PhD was probably relatively straightforward. I did my bachelor's in Berlin and started taking some machine learning courses there, and I found them really interesting. So I applied to Imperial for the Master's in Applied Math to kind of continue that from a more applied perspective. And when I came here, I learned about the Setl CDT, and I really like the concept of the CDT that you can still find your focus and learn about different areas of machine learning. And so I applied and now I'm starting my PhD.

Emily’s journey so far

“I completed my Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics at TU Berlin and am now pursuing a Master’s in Applied Mathematics at Imperial College London, focusing on Machine Learning.”

“As an undergraduate, I took a year-long module on the mathematical foundations of ML. That was my introduction to Statistical Learning Theory – and I loved it. It combined the applied side of machine learning with the theoretical, mathematical approach I naturally gravitate toward.”

From curiosity to contribution

This autumn, Emily will begin her PhD journey, supported by a G-Research Scholarship.

“I’m most excited about the chance to explore different areas of ML within a small group of students who share similar interests – and to push the boundaries of what we know about how these systems work.”

“My research will aim to improve the mathematical understanding of ML models. I hope that leads to more reliable, interpretable, and efficient systems. For ML to reach its full potential, we need to understand it on a deeper level.”

Opening doors through NextGen

“As an international student, this scholarship is essential – it’s what makes pursuing a PhD possible for me.”

But beyond funding, Emily sees value in the broader exposure that G-Research offers:

“I’m hoping to gain a better understanding of how ML is applied to real-world problems, especially in financial markets. It’s a great opportunity to connect academic research with practical impact.”
