The role
We are seeking a highly skilled and visionary Principal HPC Engineer to support and enhance our large-scale HPC platform.
This role requires deep technical expertise and the ability to drive innovation across container, compute, storage, networking and scheduler architectures.
The ideal candidate will work closely with technology architecture teams, innovation groups, key vendor partners such as NVIDIA, Cisco and VAST, and internal and external open-source communities to develop next-generation HPC solutions.
The role also involves close collaboration with other senior engineers across G-Research to ensure alignment with strategic objectives.
Key Responsibilities:
Leading the design, development and optimisation of large-scale HPC infrastructure including compute, container, storage and networking layers
Shaping and scaling the HPC roadmap in partnership with Architecture and Engineering teams
Researching, evaluating and integrating emerging technologies such as GPUs, DPUs, AI-driven workflows and high-speed interconnects
Building partnerships with key vendors, such as NVIDIA, Cisco and VAST, academic institutions and industry groups to drive innovation and collaboration
Contributing to and leveraging open-source HPC projects and frameworks
Defining best practices for cluster management, workload scheduling, data lifecycle and sustainable operations
Ensuring high availability, reliability, security and efficiency across the HPC platform
Automating deployment and monitoring of HPC workloads in collaboration with DevOps and SRE teams
Representing the organisation at industry events, publishing technical content and mentoring others in HPC technologies and trends
Who are we looking for?
The ideal candidate will have the following skills and experience:
PhD or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Computational Sciences or a related field
10+ years’ experience in HPC architecture, research or large-scale infrastructure design
Deep knowledge of HPC cluster design, parallel computing and high-speed networking (e.g. InfiniBand, RDMA, RoCE)
Experience with NVIDIA GPU computing, CUDA, AI/ML accelerators and high-density compute architectures
Strong background in distributed storage systems such as VAST, Lustre, Ceph and GPFS
Proficiency in HPC workload schedulers (e.g. Aramda, Slurm, PBS, Kubernetes-based orchestration)
Expertise in Linux kernel tuning, performance profiling and system-level optimisation
Understanding of open-source contribution models and collaborative development
Preferred:
Familiarity with AI-driven HPC and hybrid cloud HPC architectures
Hands-on experience with Cisco high-performance networking solutions
Proven ability to work across multidisciplinary teams and drive strategic technology initiatives
