Why intern at G-Research engineering

Engineering internship tracks

Our internships are for the people who understand that hardware design at this level is equal parts engineering discipline and creative problem-solving.

We offer multiple engineering pathways, each designed to give you real ownership, real responsibility and exposure to the systems that keep G-Research operating at the frontier.

FPGA engineering intern

As an FPGA engineering intern, you’ll be building hardware systems where the gap between competitive advantage and obsolescence is measured in nanoseconds. Expect to join a team designing and optimising ultra-low-latency infrastructure operating at global scale – a hands-on environment where your digital design skills are applied directly to real-world challenges.

You’ll be working alongside specialists who have spent years refining their craft, learning how to think and build at this level, and who are committed to sharing that expertise with you.

Software engineering intern

Software engineering sits at the core of our technical organisation. As an intern, you’ll work across the platforms that support our quantitative research, contributing to the development, enhancement and modernisation of the systems that underpin the entire business.

You’ll gain experience with both battle-tested legacy systems – understanding why they were built the way they were – and the latest technologies, helping shape what we adopt next. You’ll collaborate with engineers who have scaled complex, high-performance systems, and your work will be held to the same high standards as theirs, because what you build here matters.

A day in the life of an engineering intern

There’s no fixed routine here, your day shifts with the problems you’re solving. Some days are spent deep in code, others in rapid-fire collaboration or exploring new tools and ideas. But most engineering days follow similar themes:

Engineering deep work

This is where you’ll spend a big part of your time – hands on keyboard, solving real problems.
You’ll write clean, high-performance Python or C++, profile and debug complex systems and stress-test infrastructure to make sure it can handle real-world demands. Some days you’ll build internal tools; other days you’ll contribute directly to production pipelines that researchers rely on. You’ll work across compute clusters, design processes that scale, automate workflows and push systems to be smarter, faster and more reliable

Real-time collaboration

Nothing at G-Research is built in isolation. As an engineering intern, you’ll spend a meaningful part of your day working shoulder-to-shoulder with the people who use, rely on and push the systems you’re building. You’ll whiteboard ideas with research engineers, pair-program with ML teams and jump into technical problem-solving sessions that happen organically throughout the day.

Feedback loops are fast and focused. When you hit a system bottleneck or want to sanity-check an idea, the expert who can help is often just a few steps away. Being in the office means problems get solved in minutes and breakthroughs come from conversations. It’s collaborative engineering at its sharpest.

Continuous learning

Engineering here moves quickly, and so will you. Every week, you’ll be exposed to something new: reading papers to spark ideas, experimenting with emerging frameworks and exploring improvements to internal tooling, or attending technical workshops that push your understanding further.

You’ll learn how systems work, why they work the way they do, how they behave at scale and how small decisions shape reliability and performance. Whether it’s a new approach to orchestration, a fresh optimisation technique or a research concept you want to prototype, you’ll have the autonomy and support to explore it.

Programme structure

From day one, you’re treated like an engineer not an observer. Our programme is built to give you the structure you need and the freedom to make a real impact.

1. Pre-start meet and greet

Before the internship begins, you’ll be invited into the London office to meet your future teammates, fellow interns and get a feel for the place you’ll soon be working. It’s also a chance to explore London, ask questions and start planning where you might want to live when the programme begins.

2. Onboarding

You’ll set up your environment, learn our tools and workflows, explore the codebase and you’ll also take part in a structured intern bootcamp, building the context you need through sessions that may include an Introduction to Financial Markets, presentation skills training and internal talks such as An Introduction to DevPods. By the end of week one, you won’t just know where things are, you’ll understand how to start contributing.

3. Project work

You’ll dive straight into a live engineering problem – building systems, improving pipelines or developing tooling that supports real research. This is your chance to show us you’ve got what it takes and contribute to something purposeful. Your code will matter, and your work will have users.

4. Weekly mentor sessions

You’ll work one-to-one with a senior engineer who will support you. Each week, they’ll help you sharpen your approach, break through blockers and improve your project beyond what you thought possible. Learning directly from someone who has walked the path before you is one of the fastest ways to grow.

5. Workshops and internal talks

Learn directly from the people pushing the boundaries of the industry. You’ll get access to high-intensity technical workshops and deep-dive engineering sessions that expose you to the latest ideas, emerging technologies and ways of thinking that reshape how you build.

6. End-of-internship presentation

You’ll present your project, insights, and results to senior engineers and key stakeholders – a rare opportunity to showcase what you delivered, justify your decisions and demonstrate the impact you’ve made in just twelve weeks.
