Welcome to Meet the Scholars – a new blog series celebrating the talented students supported by G-Research scholarships. These awards form a key part of our NextGen initiative, which is dedicated to nurturing the next generation of researchers in STEM and AI/Machine learning (ML).

These stories spotlight the individuals driving the future of research: their academic journeys, areas of focus and what the opportunity means to them. In this edition, we meet Joshua, who’s pursuing a PhD at the University of Southampton in Agent-Based Modelling.

Well, I, uh, started at the University of Southampton, um, back during COVID where I was studying engineering. I didn't quite mesh with it very much. So then I transferred internally to maths, which I absolutely fell in love with, and I found the PhD whilst I was down there and decided to stay on. So my PhD the project is going to be looking into agent-based modeling and how, uh, we can introduce behavioral dynamics and energy consumption dynamics specifically to transportation modeling. Just so we can make models more accurate. Well, I mean, specifically my PhD has a lot to do with simulation. I'd love to gain a better insight about how we model really complex systems and how, you know, the maths that I've learned in my degree can actually be applied to the real world to simulate things more accurately.

Joshua’s journey so far

“I’m currently doing my PhD at the University of Southampton, where my research focuses on agent-based transport modelling.”

Joshua’s work aims to strengthen how transport systems are modelled by integrating both energy consumption and human behaviour into agent-based simulations.

“My project looks at how agent-based transport models can be adapted to include energy consumption dynamics, how behavioural mechanisms can be integrated into simulations, and how different policy interventions shape mobility transitions.”

From curiosity to contribution

At the heart of Joshua’s research is a desire to better understand behaviour and how it can be represented mathematically.

“One area I’m particularly interested in exploring further during my PhD is how human behaviour can be accurately modelled in mathematical terms.”

For Joshua, the value of research lies in uncovering something genuinely new.

“To me, research impact is the ability to answer questions for the first time.”

Looking ahead, he hopes his work will extend beyond academia.

“I’d love to see my research used outside of a purely academic context.”

Opening doors through NextGen

As a G-Research Scholar, Joshua is looking forward to being part of a wider community of researchers working at the forefront of their fields.

“I’m particularly excited to see the work from the other scholars over the next few years. Getting to know people tackling different problems will give me a fresh perspective on my own research.”
