The role

We are seeking an exceptional engineering leader to head our Technical Signals Engineering function – a key pillar of our Research Engineering division.

This role reports directly into the Head of Research Engineering and offers the opportunity to shape and evolve a high-impact team that partners closely with Research to co-develop and operationalise complex, compute-intensive ML models.

This is a rare opportunity to lead at the intersection of world-class engineering, cutting-edge quantitative research and real-world impact.

Key responsibilities of the role include:

  • Defining and executing the long-term strategy for the Technical Signals Engineering function

  • Leading and evolving a high-performing engineering organisation, including multiple experienced managers

  • Shaping the future of our compute estate, including adoption and optimisation of next-generation infrastructure

  • Building and maintaining robust systems to run models in live 24/5 environments, with observability, reliability and operational control at their core

  • Developing and embedding best-in-class MLOps practices

  • Helping to define our vision for the future of ML and quantitative research, and mapping out our vision in this space

  • Acting as a key partner and sparring peer to Research, bridging deep technical insight with applied domain understanding

  • Owning the function’s roadmap, headcount and budget, adapting priorities in line with strategic and technical developments

  • Contributing to the strategic direction of G-Research’s broader engineering and compute estate, helping define how our infrastructure enables long-term competitive edge

Who are we looking for?

The ideal candidate will have the following skills and experience:

  • Deep expertise in machine learning systems engineering, with the technical depth to challenge, enable and accelerate world-class research

  • Proven track record of people leadership, including developing leaders of leaders, and scaling high-functioning technical organisations

  • Strong operations and product mindset, with hands-on experience running ML models and platforms in production at scale

  • Deep practical experience in MLOps

  • Demonstrate clear, strategic thinking, with the ability to map industry trends to technical roadmaps, drive change and align teams to a compelling vision

  • Experience working in high-performance computing environments, with exposure to large-scale model training, time-series forecasting or quantitative domains beneficial

  • Strong collaboration and communication skills, with the ability to influence stakeholders across engineering, research and product boundaries
