Backing the next generation of researchers: highlights from our Bloomberg feature

  • News

Our academic partnerships were featured in a Bloomberg article published 27 October that looked at how the AI boom is changing the way quantitative firms connect with the world’s top scientific talent. Read on for highlights from the article or head to Bloomberg News [paywall] for the full story.

NextGen and our contribution to European AI research

This summer we announced the largest private-sector investment to date in the European Laboratory for Learning and Intelligent Systems (ELLIS), providing funding for 36 researchers and supporting international research collaboration across Europe.

Alongside this, we’ve committed to funding 43 PhD students across eight UK universities, reflecting our wider commitment to supporting the next generation of researchers.

Discover more about how we’re investing in academic research and early-career talent through our G-Research NextGen programme.

Support for research without conditions

The researchers we sponsor are not expected to join G-Research or to work on anything related to finance. As Charles Martinez, our Academic Relations Manager, explains, our aim is to support great science. If that also raises our profile among talented researchers, that’s a welcome bonus.

The quality of our research environment

Our research groups operate much like academic PhD groups, with collaboration, curiosity and rigour at the centre. They’re backed by some of the most powerful computing resources available, so researchers can test whatever they want.

For those considering a career at G-Research, this offers a valuable insight into our research culture and the opportunities to pursue ambitious ideas.

Our ability to compete for leading scientific talent

Charles Martinez, travels the world attending a number of machine learning conferences and a range of global universities to connect with the top scientific and mathematical talent. His message to researchers is that the skills used to build cutting-edge AI can also be applied to predicting movements in financial markets. He’s confident that G-Research is a compelling place for the world’s best scientific minds.

Quantitative research has always had deep academic roots and that connection is stronger than ever as machine learning, a field shaped by university research, plays a central part in our work. Many of the field’s biggest breakthroughs begin in these university labs, and we’re proud to support the researchers pushing it forward.

We’re always interested in hearing from curious, talented researchers. Explore our G-Research NextGen programme to find out more about how we support academic research and early careers.
