G-Research partners with ELLIS to support the next generation of European AI researchers

We’re pleased to announce a new partnership with the European Laboratory for Learning and Intelligent Systems (ELLIS), supporting PhD students and international research collaboration across Europe.

As part of G-Research NextGen, we will fund 36 researchers participating in the ELLIS PhD and Postdoc Program for the next two years.

The partnership builds on our long-term commitment to support research in quantitative fields, such as mathematics, statistics, computer science and machine learning. Our aim is to help early-career researchers pursue ambitious ideas and collaborate across leading research institutions.

Breakthroughs in AI and machine learning happen when exceptional researchers are given the support they need to pursue ambitious ideas. ELLIS has built one of the strongest research networks in Europe. By combining ELLIS's academic leadership with G-Research's commitment, we can help create the conditions for the next generation of advances in machine learning.

Supporting research across Europe

The ELLIS PhD and Postdoc Program brings together leading researchers from across Europe. As part of the program, PhD students benefit from joint supervision and collaborate internationally on cutting-edge machine learning research.

G-Research will support two groups of researchers. Twelve PhD students affiliated with the ELLIS sites in Paris, Tübingen, Munich and Amsterdam will receive funding covering tuition fees alongside a contribution towards living and related study costs throughout their doctoral studies.

In addition, 24 students undertaking the programme’s mandatory six-month international research exchange will receive funding to cover the costs associated with studying at another ELLIS institution or partner organisation.

By removing financial barriers, students can focus fully on their research and make the most of opportunities to collaborate across Europe’s leading AI research community.

This partnership, the largest private-sector collaboration for ELLIS, reflects our broader commitment to supporting scientific research through our NextGen initiative.

Alongside our scholarship programme with leading universities across the UK, our grants, prizes and STEM partnerships and other investments help strengthen the pipeline of researchers tackling some of the most challenging problems in machine learning and artificial intelligence.
