What should you expect from Spring into Quant Finance? You're going to meet a whole bunch of really smart people. You're going to get shown the kinds of challenging work that we tackle day by day, and you get to do it in an incredible place. So far, I think my favorite workshop has been a workshop on ML, specifically gradient boosting. I haven't done that before, so I really learned a lot there, and it was really interactive. It might be someone's first time that they've ever heard about quant finance, so we really want to make sure that people are able to get under the hood and actually understand a bit more about the industry. The general culture of GR is that it's deeply academic. It's almost like an extension of university and an extension of my studies, whereas other traditional finance firms can be much more siloed. I've never thought about finance as a career before. When I heard about this opportunity, I was like, "Okay, let's give it a go and see what it's all about." And to be honest, after this week, I'm seriously considering going into this field and applying for the summer internship at G-Research. I had this chance to speak to the quants, and they were coming from a non-machine learning background. I realized that at the end of the day, you're going to learn your skills in the job directly, and what matters is having a good general math background, and that's totally okay. The work or intellectual component is great, but I should also say there is a very nice social component. G-Research is an extremely fun place to work. We work very hard, but there is a huge social element to working here. We've also been hosting some very exciting activities throughout the week, and we've carefully planned those in to give a bit of an example of what it really is like to work here. It's an ML playground, for one. Unlimited data, unlimited compute, the freedom to explore any idea. Why would you want to be anywhere else? So if you're from a STEM background and you love challenging problems, and you've ever thought that finance might be an interesting place to explore, you should apply.
