Hear from Josh, Quantitative Research Intern, on exploring signal research, making use of G-Research’s compute and developing the skills he’ll take back to his PhD.

Fact file

Position: Quantitative research Intern (10-weeks)

Team: Quantitative Research

Before G-Research: PhD student in Computational Statistics at the University of Bristol

“During my internship, I worked on improving existing research approaches and exploring new methods. Day to day, I constructed and ran experiments, analysed the results and used what I learnt to iterate on my approach and improve the overall prediction.

“I was surprised by how much access I had to G-Research’s compute. I was able to run a significant number of experiments, similar to a full-time researcher, which gave me the freedom to explore different ideas through experimentation.

“That experience has taught me a lot about what makes a good experimental researcher, which I’ll be able to take back to my PhD. It’s also given me a much clearer understanding of what working as a quantitative researcher involves.

“If you’re thinking of applying for a quantitative research role, show curiosity and engage with everything you can. I’d also recommend making sure you have a really strong understanding of the fundamentals.”
