Position: Summer Research Programme Intern (10-weeks)
Team: Quantitative Research
Before G-Research: PhD student at the Institute of Science and Technology, Austria
“I’ve gained hands-on experience with my day-to-day focusing on running and observing new experiments, analysing results and deciding on the next steps; often designing and coding fresh experimental setups when existing tools weren’t enough. This has given me a real taste of the fast-paced, iterative nature of applied research in a state-of-the-art firm, where every experiment has the potential to shape future approaches.
“The experience has allowed me to put my deep learning and analytical skills into practice while significantly expanding my technical knowledge. I’ve picked up new coding techniques, broadened my understanding of how financial data behaves in a machine-learning context and gained valuable modelling insights from colleagues and mentors.
“Overall, it was a hugely valuable experience that sharpened my skills and gave me a new perspective on building models with real-world impact.”
Culture and community
“One of the things I’ve really enjoyed is the culture here. People are friendly, enthusiastic and ambitious, and I always felt supported both within my team and more widely. It’s the kind of place where you can see yourself not just working well with others but also making friends along the way.
“There’s also been plenty going on outside of work. I’ve joined socials, tech talks and learning sessions, but the highlights for me were definitely a cricket match (my first time playing!) and a summer party at the British Museum. These moments made the experience really memorable and gave me a chance to connect with people outside of my immediate project.
Preparing for a quant research internship
“For anyone thinking of applying, I’d say it’s worth preparing properly for the interviews. It helps to refresh your problem-solving techniques and some basic finance knowledge. Once you get an offer, following your mentor’s advice on how to prepare for the internship goes a long way.
“Overall, I’ve really enjoyed my time and would recommend the internship to anyone considering this area for their career. It’s been a great mix of challenging work, learning opportunities and fun experiences along the way.”
We run a wide range of internships and placement opportunities in quantitative research, engineering and corporate functions every year.
